24 Pounder Field Howitzer
From Neff Cannons
The howitzer, being a short barreled cannon, was designed to fire large projectiles. It could fire projectiles at a higher trajectory than a gun of similar caliber. The howitzer, having a chamber on its breech, used a relatively small powder charge. The 24-pounder had a 65 inch tube of bronze, with a bore of 5.82 inches. A 2 pound powder charge had a range of 1322 yards at 5° elevation. During the course of the civil war, the U.S. Army purchased 58 of this caliber of howitzer.
